Goodbye 2011- Hello 2012 BFF 154

It seems a little late in the day to be saying goodbye to 2011 and hello to 2012, but since I haven’t written a word this year…it somehow feels appropriate. It is a new year, the holiday break is finally over, the kids back to school, and it is time to either $hit or get off the pot.

It has been so nice to devote the time to my kids while they were home. I was blessed to have my husband home for Christmas and to bring in the New Year. As I predicted, he was Mr. Make it Happen and because of him Santa Claus did find my house to the delight of all of us. 2011 was a rough year which we survived and thankfully as 2012 rolled in, for the first time in my life I was simply satisfied to yell “Happy New Year” to my children from bed, kiss my sweet husband goodnight and go to sleep. Every other year we celebrated. We hollered, set off fire crackers, popped balloons, and danced around like lunatics. In years past we always indulged in a little alcohol to toast the New Year. Not this one.

This year began quietly with no pomp and circumstance, but happily because we were all together. It signaled a time to do away with excess and expensive electronics. Goodbye expensive cell phone that could do everything but wipe my a$$, thank you very much. Hello inexpensive, pay as you go phone! Goodbye modem, DVR, and 50 million channels I could never hope to watch, and hello the bare minimum! Goodbye home phone!! I never used you anyway, and the only people who did call on that phone I really never wanted to talk to anyways. Goodbye game systems!! The kids are a lot better behaved without you!

2012 has welcomed a return to simpler times at my house. A time of reading books, listening to music, watching movies and local television, and playing games with my kids. The Christmas of 2011 brought my kids interest in LEGOS. I received the game “Creationary” for Christmas and it has quickly become a family favorite. The kids and I have spent hours creating the images on the cards included in the game. The kids received and built Harry Potter LEGOS and play constantly with their Hagrid’s hut and Hogwart’s castle while enjoying Harry Potter movie marathons.

As for me, with my internet off until I can reinstate it at home, I have taken a vacation from writing while my kids were on Christmas break. Now that they are back to school, it is time to write and get off the pot! To be honest, I have thought about giving up writing entirely. Still, here I am. What the hell, writing has become a part of me and I will continue for better or for worse. One day I will have the convenience of internet at home again, and until then I will make do somehow. I would miss it and the friends I have made, so I continue for better or for worse. Hello writing! So without regrets, I bid adieu to 2011 and hello to 2012 until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. Without the conveniences of cable, internet, home phone, etc., you sure will be having a lot of quality time with the kids--and this is a good thing. We had a self-imposed black out around Christmas time--and just enjoyed playing madlibs and uno and other games. Funny how the kids weren't even interested in the "modern" conveniences when we gathered together to play real games. So much fun!! Here's to a better 2012!! Cheers, Jenn.

  2. Jenn, I think this black out has actually been really great for the kids. We have had so much fun playing LEGOS, card games, and even monopoly. I sure hope 2012 is better! So far so good. Thanks for stopping by to read and for your comments!

  3. I have internet but couldn't be bothered to write over Christmas either - too much playing to do instead.

While you are enjoying it - write . Deffo

  4. I miss you, but YAY for family time. Back in 1971, our TV broke. We certainly didn't have the money for a new one, so we played games and read and simply enjoyed family life. It was one of the best times of my life. We were without a TV for about 7 months (if I remember correctly). Once there was a TV in the house again, we all went back to zombies... I often wished that we had never gotten another TV, but, yanno...just couldn't do that willingly.

It's great to see you again. Never quit writing!

  5. It's SO good to see you, but to be honest, I think the changes you've made will reap enormous benefits for your family--far beyond the financial ones. Stop in when you can, enjoy it all! ♥

  6. Yes, I missed your writing Kathy when I wasn't busy with the grandchildren. We traveled at Christmas so we could be with them and truly enjoyed ourselves!!!! We had a big birthday party for Jesus and played regular board and card games. Made fudge and brownies to go along with the peppermint angel food birthday cake. Grampa and Grammy took them out to lunch and shopping in pairs and had a ball.

So, I'm glad that you could enjoy your children and husband just relaxing around your home. Family life is the most important thing we have. Not keeping a writing schedule can be quite liberating, I know. But, it still feels good to be writing and back in touch with the outside world. We'll just prioritize and be happy in this new year. OK?

  7. I am so glad to read your writing again! I really miss you. I hope the internet is the first thing you re-instate! Okay, I'm being very selfish and I know it, but that's just how I am. lol
Family time is invaluable and there is balance, if you seek it...but for now, I'll just be super-duper happy when I see the trucker's wife has dropped by! ♥
