For some odd reason when I seen this BFF challenge I thought about the song painting the roses red from the Disney classic “Alice in Wonderland”! That crazy song has stuck in my head ever since.
Seriously though, what woman doesn’t like roses?? What woman in their right mind doesn’t wish some tall, dark and handsome prince charming type won’t ride up and present her with a dozen long stem red roses? Ahhhh! How romantic! It is straight out of a fairytale or romance novel. Does that kind of stuff really happen in real life?
To celebrate our first Valentine’s Day my husband arrived at my front door bearing gifts. Not only did he have a dozen red roses, but he also brought me a racy red negligee, a copy of the romantic movie “Ice Castles”, and a box of my favorite conversation hearts. Holy hell, I almost swallowed my tongue. Then for the piece ala resistance, he dropped to one knee and thrust a heart shaped diamond solitaire ring at me and asked me to marry him. I about died. It took me all of two seconds to say “YES”! Amazingly enough we are still happily married today.
While we were dating he never failed to surprise me with roses for absolutely no reason at all. I was spoiled and I loved it. As time marched on the roses have become fewer and farther between. Actually the old rose quota is down to nil. It is cool though. I don’t need roses to know my husband loves me. That isn’t to say I still don’t like them. What is not to like? They are beautiful, delicate, and they smell really good, forget all the meanings they suggest. Florists make a fortune selling roses this time of year, and because of it they jack up the price. In my husband’s defense, he did present me with a long stem chocolate rose wrapped in red foil for Valentines Day before heading back on the road. I can still take a satisfying whiff of it, but then I get to devour it and savor every single precious bite.
When I was growing up this elderly couple lived along the boundary of my folk’s property. The lady used to love that sweet smelling lotion called “Rose Milk”. She and her husband had to be close to ninety at the time and I used to go to her house and she would treat me to bread slathered with butter with a generous topping of sugar. One day she confided in me while offering me some Rose Milk for my hands that a little Rose Milk let her husband know she was in the “mood” for action. L0rd, have mercy!! I almost swallowed my tongue! I walked a little quicker past him on my home that day.
How can you truly describe the magical, mystical qualities of a rose? There is no other flower on the planet that screams “love” and “romance” quite like it. It must be why they are so sought after and cherished once received. There is no better way to say “I love you” than with a rose until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.
My husband is the romantic type who gives me roses for Valentine's and my birthday--even after almost 19 years. I'm lucky.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing I like more than getting flowers! What a delightful post. I hope your Valentine's Day is filled with love.
ReplyDeleteI know that on the road or sitting next to you, you will loved endlessly by that trucker on Valentine's day. I know that because you are so lovable! I am a rose fan and my husband will not be home on Valentine's Day this year, but I am guessing our local florist has already been given the order to get those roses here! He almost never misses, I would be fine with any flower, I would be fine knowing that in his absence, he sent the blooms to remind me how luckity lucky I am. ♥♥♥♥♥3
ReplyDeleteElaine, you are a very lucky lady! My husband made sure to do all his Valentine shopping before he left because he won't be back for the day. I am certain I will get a special phone call on the day. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!
ReplyDeleteSharon, it is fun getting flowers but less fun watching your pets eat the blooms and then vomit them up. Yuck! After a few occasions like that and the simple fact that roses wilt and look croaked my husband chooses to bypass the flowers option. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!
ReplyDeleteJo,you are so sweet! As much as I love roses, I know how much they cost so I understand when I don't receive them. The best Valentine I got this year was a whole week with my sweetheart at home. That was worth more than any flowers he could give me. Especially after his being gone for 6 weeks. I know he will call me and remember me on the day. Thank you for stopping by to read and comment.
ReplyDeletenice post...and...
ReplyDeletethanks for stopping by my blog, kathy, and commenting... about all my red stuff...
Danneromero, thank you and you are very welcome! I loved all your red stuff! I am slowly but surely adding more red stuff to my house. I love red! I will be able to visit everyone even more now that I have internet at home again!! I am so pleased you stopped by and that you liked my post.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post, Kathy. What a great story about your elderly neighbors :-D
ReplyDeleteYou absolutely nailed the week's challenge and that video of Alice was perfect!
ReplyDeleteI did so enjoy this post. Your husband is certainly a keeper. The video was wonderful...I grinned like a 6 year old throughout! Then I giggled at your elderly neighbors... Such a wonderful post!!!
ReplyDeleteTheresa, I loved those folks. They were in their late 80's or early 90's at the time. I loved visiting with them. They had a humongous basement. Humongous for a little girl. They had old toys down there and puzzles. One of my kids favorite treats is sugar bread, although my son loves his toasted. Their kids eventually moved them into a nursing home where they eventually died. I have such wonderful memories of them. Thank you for stopping by to read and comment!
ReplyDeleteFeathered Pen, you know once I saw the challenge I couldn't get the blasted song out of my head!
ReplyDeletePainting the roses red
We're painting the roses red
We dare not stop
Or waste a drop
So let the paint be spread
We're painting the roses red
We're painting the roses red
Oh, painting the roses red
And many a tear we shed
Because we know
They'll cease to grow
In fact, they'll soon be dead
And yet we go ahead
Painting the roses red
Painting the roses red
We're painting the roses red
Oh, pardon me
But Mister Three
Why must you paint them red?
*talking*
Huh? Oh! Well, the fact is, Miss
We planted the white roses by mistake
And...
*singing*
The Queen she likes 'em red
If she saw white instead
She'd raise a fuss
And each of us
Would quickly lose his head
[Alice:Goodness!]
Since this is the part we dread
We're painting the roses red
[Alice:Oh, Dear! Then let me help you]
Painting the roses red
We're painting the roses red
Don't tell the Queen what you have seen
Or say that's what we said
But we're painting the roses red
Yes, painting the roses red
Not pink
Not green
Not aquamarine
We're painting the roses red!
I may just have to dig that video out and watch it now!! LOLOLOL Thank you so much for stopping by to read and comment. I am grinning like the Cheshire cat because you said I nailed it. YAY!
Darlene, I am so pleased you enjoyed it. The fact that it brought a smile to your face and made you giggle is the highest praise imaginable!! Thank you for stopping by to read and share your thoughts! You made my day!
ReplyDeleteThis was such a wonderful post, Kathy. I've written about your good posts many times, but --- this tops them all!!! Getting a dozen red roses is truly lovely and the memories are wonderful but it was good to read about your practical approach to them at your place in life. (I'm giggling as I picture your pets tearing up those beautiful flowers.) It was also a delight reading about the Rose Milk lotion and that "older couples" can be very much in love.
ReplyDeleteMy sweet husband really enjoyed getting me roses and other bouquets of flowers on special occasions and -- for no reason at all. But in recent years with not as much spending money as we were used to and ---- the current prices, we have ceased thinking of them and have found other ways to express love. Red roses are a wonderful expression of love and your story was wonderful.
Betty, I am so pleased you enjoyed my post! Thank you for stopping by to read and for your delightful comments!
ReplyDeleteI like roses--but they just aren't necessary in my world. I'd rather spend the evening out on the town with my hubby or curled up by his side watching a movie. Roses make a nice touch--and I don't frown if I get them--but I'd much rather save that money and go to the wedding this weekend then have him spend the money on roses!!
ReplyDeleteNice post! Jenn
Jenn, I feel the same way about roses that you do. There is always some other way the money can be used. Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!
