Love Letters- BFF 166

When I was in junior high school I had a huge crush on this one boy that I had seen from afar.  I was in 7th grade at the time and he was in 9th.  I didn’t even know his last name, only his first.  My friends and I would follow him around on my behalf.  I would try to be places I knew he would be just to catch a glimpse.  I am quite certain he didn’t know I was alive.

For that reason I was shocked when I found a love letter from him in my locker one day.  The letter said all the things I wanted it to say.  I don’t remember the exact wording but the jest was that he felt the same way about me that I did about him.  I walked on cloud nine for days and even gathered enough guts to approach him.  He was friendly enough but it was pretty obvious he was clueless about what I was talking about.  My so-called best friends stood back and watched in a fit of giggles as I humiliated myself.

To make a long story short, he never wrote me the letters.  He didn’t really know me at all.  My so-called friends had written the letters and made up a last name to go with them.  They led me to believe the letters were from him and that he really liked me too.  Needless to say I lost two girlfriends out of that fiasco.  I was so completely embarrassed, hurt, and my heart filled with complete hatred for my supposed friends.  Ironically the guy took my side in the situation and I won his friendship out of the deal, but only his friendship, not his heart.

I haven’t really gotten any love letters since.  In this day in age of emails and text messages love letters have become almost obsolete.  Who sits down today and takes pen to paper to pour out their hearts these days?  I was starting to feel a little down thinking I had little to contribute to the subject of love letters.

I woke up this morning, put on my glasses, and glanced at my cell phone noticing almost instantly that I had a text message from my husband.  “Going to bed, I love you and miss you all too.  I made it to Virginia.”  Instantly I felt all warm and cozy and explicitly happy inside.  There was my love letter!  If you count love text messages, I get those all the time.  I have never thought about them as being “love letters” but that is exactly what they are.  No I can’t douse it in perfume, tie it up in a satin bow, and keep it in a special place but the meaning is the same.  He loves me, he misses me, and he took the time to send me the message and tell me so! It is doubtful that years from now someone will find it and feel their heart warm from all the love and tenderness that exudes from that message.  Text messages don’t last that long. They are more expedient and quickly replaced by more text messages.  Phones are upgraded and those messages are lost forever.

The best part of the whole thing is that even though my husband is far away, he still got his message across.  He wrote me a love letter.  He thought of me and that is all that matters until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. Love it Kathy, I got all the love letters I had written my wife over the years back. They were shredded like the lining of a hamster cage.

  2. Fireman, oh! that is sad!! I take it you are not on the best of terms with her?? What a guy you must be to have written them in the first place! Kudos to you! Thanks for stopping by to read and comment! I am so pleased you enjoyed it!

  3. What an awful trick for your so-called friends to do, but at least the boy took your side. I well remember the days of unrequited love and dreaming about someone you hardly knew!
So glad you get your REAL 'love letters' now,

  4. Oh my Kathy, those love letters of old are just mean, as we all know teen-age girls can be very mean. Is there a movie in there someplace? Oh yeah, already done. Anyway, the real love is the one you share now with those easily sent and straight from the heart sentiments. I still after nearly 30 years love hearing, "I love you" from Roomy and I love that he never goes to bed without kissing me good night. (when he's home) If he leaves me a note for any reason it always ends..."Love ya" Those are my love letters. ♥♥♥♥♥

  5. I had a huge stack of letters from when my high school sweetheart was in the Air Force, but I threw them all away after I married someone else. Now I wish I had not done that just because I wish I could read them again just to remember what it felt like to be young with my whole life ahead of me. Those letters were full of dreams...

Since Hubby & I spend 24/7 together, there are no notes or letters...just two old people who take the time to hug and kiss every day, sharing those 3 little words often each day.

  6. Paula, it was awful rude of them and certainly made me see they were no friends of mine. Sadly it ingrained a deep mistrust of all my classmates and a few tricks like that made me a virtual loner. I am happy with who I ended up with and how things are now. It was worth the wait! Thank you for stopping by to read and comment!

  7. Jo, it was extremely mean and I can't imagine what possessed them to concoct such a hair brain scheme. I am glad I ended up with who I did. He was worth the wait. :D Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!

  8. Darlene, what a treasure! I can understand why you threw them away too. I basically cut my ex husband off all the pictures that contained me or my parents that I wanted to keep. He was part of my past and has no part of my life now. Good riddance to him too! Thank you for stopping by to read and leave a comment!

  9. I love this, Kathy. You're right! These are love letters, and we need to see them as such. That's terrible what your friends did to you. Why are girls like that? I've seen it over and over, and even experienced similar things myself-all with "friends". Ugh! In my experience, guys were much better friends at that age :)

  10. Those little things mean so much don't they? Who needs those fake letters when all you have to do is look at your phone, or email and have something so real, so perfect...just waiting for you. Sounds like you have the best hubby too!

  11. It is the modern day love letter! Cool write Kathy!

  12. That took me back to my school days. Classmates can be so cruel. Nicely written post. Thanks for sharing and dropping by my blog.

  13. Theresa, I have no idea why they did it. Maybe they thought it was funny. I didn't one bit. It seemed like guys were always better friends in school. I am so happy you stopped by and liked what you found here. Thank you for reading and for your kind comments!

  14. Karen, it really is the modern day love letter. Technology and progress have effectively made the love letters of yesterday practically obsolete. Thank you for stopping by, reading and for your kind comments. I am so pleased you enjoyed it!

  15. Suzy, kids are cruel. It is the one thing I fear most for my children. I want to shield them from that, and warn them. Although I would love to isolate them and protect them from all hurts, it is a part of life. Experiences like that make us wiser and help us appreciate the real Mc Coy when it comes along. It makes you learn some hard lessons about people and relationships. I am glad you enjoyed my post and I enjoy dropping by and seeing what you have been up to. :D Thank you for reading and for your kind comments!

As to the pretty little liars back in your younger years, that was really nasty!

  24. November Rain, considering it took me so long to take my head out of my a$$ and realize that was exactly what my text messages were is almost laughable. Now I feel all special. LOLOLOL Here I thought I had nothing to contribute to this topic and then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Thank you for stopping by to read and comment!!

  26. Joyce, kids are mean and girls specifically. Technically I am still a girl inside. On the outside I have grown into a woman--hear me roar! LOL I never really think of myself in that way. Weird! When I first read your comment I thought you meant I had a special surgery of some sort! LOLOLOLOL Then I read it again and knew what you meant. It still left me laughing hysterically and for that I thank you!! Thank you for stopping by to read my post and leave a comment!

  27. Adelia, if you mean marching up to him and declaring how thrilled I was that he felt the same way about me and that we should get together sometime and having him look at me like I just escaped from the loony bin...well then YES kudos to me!! I believe he asked me if I was nuts and then told me "I don't even KNOW you!" at which point I burst into tears. Bless him, it was at that point he ushered me away from the throng on onlookers to a more private place and wheedled the story from me. Actually the story just tumbled out amid the hiccuping and tears. He was really nice about it. I have always had a lot of balls...figuratively of course!..and I have gotten a lot more outspoken and willing to speak out as I have aged. Thank you for stopping by and for the kudos. Your comments mean a lot.

  28. Ralph, well then if that is the case I have a few moments there where my life has been as spicy as a jalapeno. LOLOLOLOL As far as the text messages...I look at them in a whole new way now and treasure each and every one! Thanks for stopping by to read and comment!

  31. This is such a great story. Although the incident in high school was so awful, it sounds pretty typical. So glad that you are now receiving 'Real' love letters now!! Every day is like Valentine's Day when you get those natural expressions of love -- you know you truly are loved by a real man!!

I had saved several love letters written by the "love of my life" before we were married and when we were apart after the wedding. They were so special to me, but I lost them when a tornado destroyed our home on our third wedding anniversary. However -- I have had my sweetheart for nearly 49 years and hear him say "I love you" several times each and every day. Thanks for writing about your love letters and may you get many, many more.

  32. Betty, how tragic to have your precious letters and mementos sucked up into a tornado! I can't even begin to imagine how devastating that must have been. Your marriage is a true testament to all things wonderful and great about marriage and I hope my husband and I are together for that long or even longer too. School was pretty awful. I am just happy I came out of it as well as I did. It is typical and that is really sad. I dread the same treatment being dished out to my kids. The only difference is if history repeats itself in that way I can help guide them in how to deal with it. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your wonderful comments and all the memories you share!

    1. Yes, that tornado was devastating but we fortunately were able to salvage quite a bit. And, we were not hurt at all. We were blessed with friends to pitch in and help us get back on our feet. Also lost my wedding gown, guest book, wedding gifts in storage until bigger dining room, etc. that were stored in the attic.

High school seems to be getting more difficult as the years go by. One daughter homeschools and her children are avoiding all that. They associate with other homeschooled children that treat each other kindly. But --- my other granddaughters are going through what you described. Although the older one just kept to herself and let all that stuff "roll off her back". Now the younger one is a junior and is really hating the high school drama. It's a real shame that they can't be respectful of one another and build each other up. They would accomplish more working together and be happier.

Oh, well -- pardon me for taking up so much space on your blog!

    2. Thank the good Lord for that! I can't imagine losing my wedding gown. I would be devastated. Kids can be so mean! Going to school is a rite of passage and we all have to endure although some kids are now home schooled these days. You are welcome to come by my blog and share whenever you want. You always add to the conversation and I personally enjoy reading and responding to your comments. :D Thanks for stopping back in!

  33. I'd say those girls were never your friends to do that to you.

As to "who" takes pen to paper and writes love letters, *raises her hand* I do!

    Great post!! Cheers, Jenn
