I Love You

NaBloPoMo asks today:

“When was the last time you said I love you?”

They are the three little words that say it all.  When was the last time I said “I love you”?  About an hour ago I told my husband I loved him as we said our goodbyes on the phone.  We always end our conversations that way…always have and most likely always will.  Before that I told each of my kids I loved them with a kiss and a hug before leaving them off at school this morning.  It is always the first thing I say to them when they return.

Some people stumble over those three little words or they don’t say it unless they mean it.  Some are afraid to say it for fear that the sentiment won’t be returned.  It is a bitch when you go out of your way to say “I love you” only to have the object of your affection look at you, grimace, and say “Uh, that’s nice.”  Ouch!  You have to be almost 100% sure that they feel the same way towards you or you’re setting yourself up for embarrassment and a shit load of hurt.    I started telling the people I loved often after my mom’s kidney’s failed.  It was a wake up call that life is entirely too short to wait.  She lived each day as if it was her last and one day it was.  I made sure that she had no doubt that I loved her.  The same holds true for my Dad.  I don’t just throw out those three little words to just anyone.  The person has to have earned my love and equally be deserving of it.

How often do you tell those you love that you love them?  I don’t think you can possibly tell someone too much.  Why have the object of your devotion wonder and never know?   They deserve to know.  If tomorrow never comes, you’ll have let those you love know and they will treasure the knowledge even more.  Enjoy life and spread the love before it is too late!

  1. This is an important topic, Kathy. I know that I don't say it as often as I should. But thank you for the inspiration and challenge to be better!

    1. Katie, I never used to but once my mom got sick I realized how short life was and I didn't want those that were important me to ever doubt my love for an instant. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  2. I tell the people I love that I love them. I say it every day. We're a huggy, lovey bunch, and the words come easily and naturally. I never quite understand why some people are more comfortable to express their anger, frustration, and disappointment than they are their love.

  3. I say it all the time to the people I love, esp. to my sweet Russell. I tell him at least 20 or more times a day. I can't help it, I'm crazy about him and he's crazy about me. It took A LOT for him to confess his feelings to me, a married woman, 30+ years after he last laid eyes on me. Thank god he did.

  5. What a great post! The song "If tomorrow never comes" by Garth Brooks is one of my favorites. I lost a brother suddenly and it changed me profoundly that I make sure I say "I love you" often. I know when my husband left this world he knew how very loved he was. Great reminder Kathy.

    1. Winnie, I love that song!!! I don't think anyone can truly comprehend how much they loved that person until they are gone. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  6. My husband and I say it so often to each other that we're sort of ridiculous about it. :P I'm sure to always say it to my stepson when I see him, and again when I leave. I'm not good at saying it to various parents, though. It always feels awkward.

    1. Jerimi, I hate saying it when it feels awkward. I tend to not say it at all if it is awkward. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

    1. Lanthie, kids are so funny aren't they? My kids and I say it often to each other and there is nothing that makes my heart gladder than when my one of my kids envelope me in a great big bear hug and tell me they love me. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  8. i SO agree with you, Kathy. i never end a visit, phone call, email or even text message without saying "i love you" to my family members and other loved ones. if the only thing i leave behind in this world is the knowledge that i loved them ingrained in their hearts, i will have lived a good life by my terms.

i hope you have a lovely weekend!

  9. For years I would tell my son I love you, but he'd never say it back. Then when he was eighteen and off to college for the first time, he said, "I love you" and put me in tears.
