Second Chance

100 Words on Saturday - Write Tribe

Allison cranked the radio, rolled down the window, and enjoyed the freedom her driver’s license afforded her.  She quickly composed a text message saying she would be home soon and tapped the send button.

Realizing too late that a truck had stopped in front of her, she stomped on the brakes hard sending the car skidding as the air bag deployed.  Glass shattered, metal crunched, and the horn sounded as she slumped over.   The phone dropped as the darkness claimed her.

A week later her eyes finally fluttered open.    Intense pain overwhelmed her.  A second chance, I am truly alive!

  2. OMG!! That's terrible. Thank God that she got a second chance. Texting while driving is big NO-NO but still so many people do it nonchalantly!

    1. Shilpa, kids tend to take risky chances thinking they are super human and nothing can ever hurt them. This girl got a second chance despite her foolish choice to text while driving. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  3. So glad this girl was given a second chance. Seriously doubt she will ever text and drive again!
    Wishing her a speedy recovery!

    1. Martha, if I were her I would turn off my phone and place it firmly in my purse every single time I got behind the wheel. Seriously though, there are reasons why there are laws against texting while driving and this story illustrates perfectly why. It is dangerous, and simply not worth the risk. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

    1. Maria, it is dangerous and while the occasional text is nice...it really isn't worth it. I would rather see the person or speak to them personally. Better to arrive safe than not at all. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

    1. Lisa, it would have been really sad if one screw up and she had to pay the ultimate price. Sometimes people need a wake up call and I think this girl needed one. I think when we are young we think we are invincible and can do anything. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

    1. Shellymona, I am so pleased you enjoyed it. I realized after writing this that most of my stories lately have a dark cast to them. It is not intentional...just the way the words flow considering the prompts. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  8. I really do not understand why one has to text or talk on the phone while on the driver's seat. I think that doing one thing at a time is better than risking ones life
Glad that she got a second chance but what if she hadn't?
Nice take though, the build up was excellent

    1. bbsearchingself, in many places texting and talking on the cell phone is against the law while driving. The only way it is permissible is to have a hands free blue tooth connected device in your ear. That is what my husband uses. It is a big no-no to be on the phone while driving a semi truck, although it is OK with a hands free device. Still my husband recently took some safety training for his job that stated that the average person was only as alert as a severely drunk when when talking on the phone while driving. Imagine! 10. A very scary imagery there. This happens so often. On the roads, even a second of distraction can cause havoc. Sad that people don't want to understand this!

  11. A very good point raised by you. People need to realise that they won't get a second chance always.

    1. Shilpasharmaonline, very true because sometimes the lessons that need to be taught are for those left behind and the person making the error in judgment teaches by deadly example. In that event, it is the eye opener for others and their second chance to mend their ways. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  15. Holy cow, I am so glad that she has the second chance, not sure this is someone you know or not, but thanks for sharing a lesson to be learned. Kids should have to agree to leave phones off during time in cars, and adults as well.

    Thanks for visiting this week.

  18. The scary part about this post is that it seems too close to real life, the number of people yakking away on their phones and texting while driving are way too many nowadays...

    1. mahabore, my husband has seen people do the craziest things while driving down the road...even reading books. Seriously, how safe is that? It is a major problem and the kids get even younger who have cell phones. One holiday I was appalled that my niece texted all through the meal. What the hell. If that isn't the height of rudeness, I don't know what is. People need to learn how to live their lives and pay attention. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  19. There are way too many apps on phones these days and the number of times the phone chimes for several notifications, it is both disturbing and distracting for the driver. And the need to reply!! no need for explanation there. well written...thank god for second chances

    1. preethi, I agree completely. What I find annoying about that is the SD card provided with the phone could never in a million years accommodate them all. Those tones are distracting though. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! So pleased you enjoyed my story! ♥
