My favorite time of the day is
between the hours of 3 and 4 in the afternoon when the school buses finally
bring my children home from school. Twice
a day I make the familiar trek to the bus stop.
In the morning to insure they get on the bus safely and back again in
the afternoon to welcome them home. Both
kids greet me with smiles, hugs, and kisses with my son hitting me with a running
tackle as he flies off the bus like a projectile missile into my waiting
arms.
The walk home is filled with constant chatter that doesn’t cease until all the excitement from their days at school has been revealed. We gather around the kitchen table eating snacks and doing any homework that was sent home with them. Laughter is contagious and the kids share their days with me with such enthusiasm. I hear who did what where and who said this and that. I hear about what they had for lunch. What tasted good and what sucked and was regulated to the cafeteria garbage can. We relax and enjoy each other’s company. They ask about my day, read my posts, and offer encouragement. We vote on what’s for supper, and then I fix it.
The house is quiet while they are
away. Except for the occasional barking
of my dogs when someone walks past the house, the furnace kicking on and off,
and the quiet tapping of my fingers across the keys as I write my latest post,
the house stays relatively quiet. Every once in a while whoever is in charge of setting off the storm sirens set them off for effect. Since I live near the pole where the siren comes from my dogs go completely bat shit crazy. They line up on the back of the couch looking out the front window barking and howling for the duration of the siren. Sometimes I howl with them. Other times I yell at them to shut the hell up. Occasionally I will crank the volume of my favorite music full blast as
I work methodically away and sometimes I will watch television while I work,
but lately I revel in the silence that surrounds me punctuated with the quiet
snores of sleeping dogs. When they come
home, it is as if the house and I come alive once again. There is nothing better than hanging out in
the afternoon. What about you, what is your favorite time of the day?
My favorite time of the day is super duper early. With my coffee, journal and quiet time to write.
ReplyDeleteTalya, that sounds absolutely heavenly. I write best at my desktop computer. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteKathy, I used to think I was a morning person and that I would do my best writing then. Since I quit work (and with no kids in school), I find I do my best creatively after lunch. Mornings are for catching up on e-mails and blogs, going to the gym, and getting some housework done (definitely, not my favorite!).
ReplyDeleteBut, the quiet is so incredibly important to me. I never write with music or television on if I'm here by myself, although I've been known to write during guy-movies my husband and step-son watch from time to time. :) After years of raising kids and teaching, it was difficult for me to actually embrace silence, but now I welcome it with open arms.
Love how your and your children reconnect after a busy day. They are lucky to have such a wonderful mother!
Blessings!
Martha, I think that is when my creativity kicks in too. Generally I answer comments and return them in the mornings. Then by afternoon I am usually in the mood to write. Sometimes I have to nap. But then the kids come home and I get my second wind and am raring to go again. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteThis was such a nice post, woven with a concept as simple as your favorite time of the day.
ReplyDeleteAs for me, I guess I like the early mornings like this one where I get time to catch up with reading of blogs and commenting on them :)
mahabore, I am so pleased you enjoyed it!! To think I had no clue what to write about when I sat down at my computer. It just kind of happened. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteMorning I think is my fave time. I always preferred to start work at 7 but leave at 4, or earlier. I always have great plans to get up early but I really love sleeping till 8 too, that is when the dogs let me. They didn't get the 'turn the clocks back' memo so now they are bugging me to get up at 6 instead of 7! But I get more done in morning....best time to do all my errands!
ReplyDeleteJoJo, my dogs woke me up at 4 this morning. UGH. Was so cold out. I about froze my lady bits off. I tend to get more done in the morning too. Like to get it over with then I have the whole rest of the day before me. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥
DeleteMy fav time of the days is at 1.40 in the afternoon when my son returns home from school. we have lunch together and he tells what happened at school , his studies , the fights and fun at school and the tiffins that they shared. At times his mod is good and at times bad depending upon the fights he had at school.
ReplyDeleteKalpana, I just live for those gossip sessions and chatter with my kids. So much fun! Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteI love this time of day also! I'm always glad to see the bus coming down the road. :) It's much different than when I was a kid and I dreaded the sight of the bus. :)
ReplyDeleteholley4734, while I would have rather stayed home I don't think I ever dreaded the sight of it. I was usually happy to see it coming. Either because it was too cold to be waiting a minute longer for it or happy because my kids would be home soon. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteSweet post Kathy with a sneek peek into your lovely life!! I'm a night person...my fav time would be 10pm till midnight...get to read n do my own stuff after my in laws retire to bed...n also this is the time where I anxiously wait for hubby to be bk home from work :D
ReplyDeleteAditi, those hours are when I have finally managed to get my kids to bed and we are all reading with noses in books. By that time I am ready to read or too exhausted to care. Weekends are a complete different story. LOL Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥
DeleteAw, this is lovely! Afternoons are one of my favorite parts of the day, too. I also love early mornings--that time before anyone else is awake. I find that I'm at my most creative then.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a nice Wednesday. ☺
Dana, Thank you so much for stopping by, joining in the conversation, and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteWow. Such a lovely narrative. I can feel the happiness in your words. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favourite time of the day is when the kids and I watch TV together in the evenings. We somehow share more with each other when the TV is on. They are busy with studies and school otherwise. Teenagers are like that I guess. :(
jyothisdayout, I am so pleased you liked it. My daughter is now a teenager and while I have noticed a few subtle changes she is still pretty much the same...a joy to have about. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥
DeleteKathy you reminded me of my own childhood. If I have not told my mother everything about my day I will not sit down for lunch. See how simply I used 'will' when I should have used 'would'. Time can always be recreated with words, thanks for sharing such a happy part of your day and perhaps sending us back to our own happy times. Love and lots of hugs to you and your kids <3
ReplyDeleteRicha
Richa, I am so pleased you enjoyed my post and by reading it you were able to conjure up happy memories of your own. This is one of those moments I wonder if my children will look back on when they are all grown up and remember we always gathered around the kitchen table amid homework and snacks and discussed our days. I hope so. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥
DeleteSuch a sweet post, Kathy. I could picture the scene you described. Like Martha, I find that I'm no longer a morning person...I love the evening for blogging and chatting and the night for reading!
ReplyDeleteCorinne, I am so pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥
DeleteWe always wish for peace and quiet don't we? And then we get it and we can't wait for those kiddos to get home! I felt the same way when my kids were young and off to school all day.. Great post Kath.
ReplyDeleteMimi, isn't that the truth!! LOL Thank you for stopping by and for your lovely comments! ♥
DeleteThat's a lovely peak into your afternoons! My best part of the day is in the evening when I come back from work, sit with my hot cup of tea and laptop and music! Love that me time a lot!
ReplyDeleteShilpa, your me time sounds heavenly! Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥
DeleteI work the early shift from 7:30 to 4:30 at my office and i love that 30 minutes before 8 and all the coworkers start trickling in. I usually get my blog post done at that time and its my time to drink my coffee and brace myself for the day.
ReplyDeleteGreat great post!!
holli, that is awesome. When I worked full time I loved working early from 7:30-4. Loved getting in there and getting it over with so I could get home earlier. Thank you for stopping by. I am so pleased you enjoyed my post! ♥
DeleteWow, storm sirens? That would drive me nuts with the dogs barking (I have one dog that gets the other riled up and they ruin perfectly good silence!)
ReplyDeleteI am generally content with solitude and silence, so my favorite time of day is after the kids (and hubby) go to bed. I can read, write or be lazy and watch TV if I want to, without comment!
My kids get home from school about 45 minutes apart. We try to get my younger son's reading done before big brother gets home, because once he walks through the door, the brotherly arguments/fights begin! This is probably my least favorite time of day because they are often tired and cranky....they turn human again after dinner :)
jannawrites, they do drive me bloody insane because they are so random. They just test them. Then when a tornado is actually being predicted and we are warned to take cover the stupid sirens are silent. Go figure! I enjoy the solitude and silence too. Like yours, my children arrive about 45 minutes apart giving me time with my oldest before my youngest arrives. In the morning I have time with my youngest after my oldest leaves so it is win win. Thank you for stopping by. I am so happy you enjoyed my post. Thank you for stopping by. ♥
