Afternoon

My favorite time of the day is between the hours of 3 and 4 in the afternoon when the school buses finally bring my children home from school.  Twice a day I make the familiar trek to the bus stop.  In the morning to insure they get on the bus safely and back again in the afternoon to welcome them home.  Both kids greet me with smiles, hugs, and kisses with my son hitting me with a running tackle as he flies off the bus like a projectile missile into my waiting arms.

The walk home is filled with constant chatter that doesn’t cease until all the excitement from their days at school has been revealed.  We gather around the kitchen table eating snacks and doing any homework that was sent home with them.  Laughter is contagious and the kids share their days with me with such enthusiasm.  I hear who did what where and who said this and that.  I hear about what they had for lunch.  What tasted good and what sucked and was regulated to the cafeteria garbage can.  We relax and enjoy each other’s company.  They ask about my day, read my posts, and offer encouragement.  We vote on what’s for supper, and then I fix it.

The house is quiet while they are away.  Except for the occasional barking of my dogs when someone walks past the house, the furnace kicking on and off, and the quiet tapping of my fingers across the keys as I write my latest post, the house stays relatively quiet.  Every once in a while whoever is in charge of setting off the storm sirens set them off for effect.  Since I live near the pole where the siren comes from my dogs go completely bat shit crazy.  They line up on the back of the couch looking out the front window barking and howling for the duration of the siren.  Sometimes I howl with them.  Other times I yell at them to shut the hell up.  Occasionally I will crank the volume of my favorite music full blast as I work methodically away and sometimes I will watch television while I work, but lately I revel in the silence that surrounds me punctuated with the quiet snores of sleeping dogs.  When they come home, it is as if the house and I come alive once again.  There is nothing better than hanging out in the afternoon.  What about you, what is your favorite time of the day?

  1. My favorite time of the day is super duper early. With my coffee, journal and quiet time to write.

  2. Kathy, I used to think I was a morning person and that I would do my best writing then. Since I quit work (and with no kids in school), I find I do my best creatively after lunch. Mornings are for catching up on e-mails and blogs, going to the gym, and getting some housework done (definitely, not my favorite!).
But, the quiet is so incredibly important to me. I never write with music or television on if I'm here by myself, although I've been known to write during guy-movies my husband and step-son watch from time to time. :) After years of raising kids and teaching, it was difficult for me to actually embrace silence, but now I welcome it with open arms.
Love how your and your children reconnect after a busy day. They are lucky to have such a wonderful mother!
    Blessings!

    1. Martha, I think that is when my creativity kicks in too. Generally I answer comments and return them in the mornings. Then by afternoon I am usually in the mood to write. Sometimes I have to nap. But then the kids come home and I get my second wind and am raring to go again. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥

  3. This was such a nice post, woven with a concept as simple as your favorite time of the day.

As for me, I guess I like the early mornings like this one where I get time to catch up with reading of blogs and commenting on them :)

  4. Morning I think is my fave time. I always preferred to start work at 7 but leave at 4, or earlier. I always have great plans to get up early but I really love sleeping till 8 too, that is when the dogs let me. They didn't get the 'turn the clocks back' memo so now they are bugging me to get up at 6 instead of 7! But I get more done in morning....best time to do all my errands!

My fav time of the days is at 1.40 in the afternoon when my son returns home from school. we have lunch together and he tells what happened at school , his studies , the fights and fun at school and the tiffins that they shared. At times his mod is good and at times bad depending upon the fights he had at school.

  6. I love this time of day also! I'm always glad to see the bus coming down the road. :) It's much different than when I was a kid and I dreaded the sight of the bus. :)

    1. holley4734, while I would have rather stayed home I don't think I ever dreaded the sight of it. I was usually happy to see it coming. Either because it was too cold to be waiting a minute longer for it or happy because my kids would be home soon. Thank you for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥

    1. Aditi, those hours are when I have finally managed to get my kids to bed and we are all reading with noses in books. By that time I am ready to read or too exhausted to care. Weekends are a complete different story. LOL Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  8. Aw, this is lovely! Afternoons are one of my favorite parts of the day, too. I also love early mornings--that time before anyone else is awake. I find that I'm at my most creative then.

Hope you have a nice Wednesday. ☺

  9. Wow. Such a lovely narrative. I can feel the happiness in your words. :)
My favourite time of the day is when the kids and I watch TV together in the evenings. We somehow share more with each other when the TV is on. They are busy with studies and school otherwise. Teenagers are like that I guess. :(

  10. Kathy you reminded me of my own childhood. If I have not told my mother everything about my day I will not sit down for lunch. See how simply I used 'will' when I should have used 'would'. Time can always be recreated with words, thanks for sharing such a happy part of your day and perhaps sending us back to our own happy times. Love and lots of hugs to you and your kids <3

    1. Richa, I am so pleased you enjoyed my post and by reading it you were able to conjure up happy memories of your own. This is one of those moments I wonder if my children will look back on when they are all grown up and remember we always gathered around the kitchen table amid homework and snacks and discussed our days. I hope so. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  14. I work the early shift from 7:30 to 4:30 at my office and i love that 30 minutes before 8 and all the coworkers start trickling in. I usually get my blog post done at that time and its my time to drink my coffee and brace myself for the day.
    Great great post!!

  15. Wow, storm sirens? That would drive me nuts with the dogs barking (I have one dog that gets the other riled up and they ruin perfectly good silence!)

I am generally content with solitude and silence, so my favorite time of day is after the kids (and hubby) go to bed. I can read, write or be lazy and watch TV if I want to, without comment!

My kids get home from school about 45 minutes apart. We try to get my younger son's reading done before big brother gets home, because once he walks through the door, the brotherly arguments/fights begin! This is probably my least favorite time of day because they are often tired and cranky....they turn human again after dinner :)

    1. jannawrites, they do drive me bloody insane because they are so random. They just test them. Then when a tornado is actually being predicted and we are warned to take cover the stupid sirens are silent. Go figure! I enjoy the solitude and silence too. Like yours, my children arrive about 45 minutes apart giving me time with my oldest before my youngest arrives. In the morning I have time with my youngest after my oldest leaves so it is win win. Thank you for stopping by. I am so happy you enjoyed my post. Thank you for stopping by. ♥
