Orange!!!!!

Do I like orange?  What’s not to like?  It is warm, vibrant, exciting, and fun!  Would I wear it?  Well, hell no.  There are some colors that are just not done by fat folks like me. It is not in my wardrobe color wheel.   I would look like a walking talking pumpkin patch, and that is just plain scary to old and young people alike.  I will admit I do have a long sleeve orange shirt that I bought to go with a Halloween vest.  It looks nice together.  Luckily for the population at large, I rarely pull that bad boy out of the closet.   How flipping embarrassing it would be to be walking down the street and have some kid with a blanket pointing me out to a bald kid.  “Look! There goes the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”

While I have my reservations about wearing orange in public, I have absolutely no problem splashing it all over my kitchen walls.  Last spring I was delighted when my husband and I painted the kitchen a brilliant orange.  Coupled with red curtains, it kind of shouts “Hello!” when you walk in the room.  I LOVE IT!   Simply love it.  It looks like the kitchen is on fire and gives another great excuse why the fire alarm is constantly going off out there.  I simply hate that damn thing.  I love to cook, and I am good at it.  One of the few things that I am good at, I must admit, but every single time I cook that damn thing goes off!  BEEP! BEEP!  BEEP!  God help us all if there was a real fire because everyone just assumes I am cooking when they hear it and go about their business.

If you have been a frequent flyer here at my blog lately you have noticed art, haiku, and some fiction.  If you have been paying attention you have also noticed the posts are few and far between.  WHY??  Well hells bells.   It should be obvious to all.   After receiving a “love letter” from one of the editors at the Yeah Write site about one of my submissions, and count them 5 flipping years of writing whatever pops into my frazzled brain and a blend of fiction and haiku, I have finally been convinced that I completely suck as a writer.  They actually call their rejection letters “LOVE” letters!  Why don’t we call them what they are?  Can we say “HATE” mail?  Anyways, instead of encouraging improving, that one letter encouraged me to hang it up.

Let’s face it.  I am NEVER going to write a
book.  I never aspired too.  It was never in the plan.  Writing simply gave me something to do during the long lonely hours while the kids were at school and my husband was on the road.  Writing served me well in that regard.  And it was fun, until it wasn’t anymore.  Not long after that email, writing became a noose around my neck slowly sucking my will to live.

With that said, my art became my salvation….again.  I have always been an artist at heart.  It is what makes my heart sing.  It makes me happy.  I am a talker.  If we met in person, I would talk your fool head off because I can.  I giggle…a lot.  Yes I do.  So to say my aura is orange a lot of the time; because I can be quite a happy little thing, would be a true statement.  I like to have fun…and honestly writing fiction is no longer fun and I don't have any good ideas rolling around in my noggin, which would help! If I ever get one, you could still see some fiction here.  I am not ruling it completely out.  Bottom line, being ME is fun.  So I am going to be doing just that on this blog from here on out.  I will be writing what makes me happy, and whoever doesn’t like it can kiss ole Whoville!

Now I feel, with the blessing of you and others, I will do just that happily. Thank you so much for stopping by and for your sweet comments! ♥

  2. Orange - I like the color too (it's my older son's favorite) but I'd never ever wear it! It just doesn't work with my pale complexion. Now fuscia? Bring it on :)

I'm sorry to read about your fiction experience. I got one of those love letters a while back, too... on a non-fiction piece. I hope you don't let it discourage you from writing entirely, though. (I still write non-fiction posts, but I don't link them anywhere.) I get what you say about fiction should be fun - it should. I quit writing for about 10 years after a creative writing class in college sucked the creativity right out of me. I left that class convinced that I was terrible. (I also received some comments from a critique site a few years ago that would support that belief, haha Whatever you do decide to post here, I'll check it out for sure. I like your conversational 'voice', your enthusiasm and your creativity- however you feel the need to express it.

So there. How's this for a love letter? :)

    1. jannatwrites, nah...I am a bit too stubborn. I just may readjust my focus and not submit there. I may write their prompts, just not link them because I do think they have imaginative prompts that really have the ability of sparking creativity. I had a similar experience with my art. I went to school for graphic design, dreamed of being an artist since little up, and even got straight A's through design school. Then I got to the end, portfolio, and was asked to redo everything. At the time, my mom was dying from cancer, and I was going through a divorce, and it all seemed to much. Then my mom died...and I just quit. I tried to get some design jobs and was turned down because either I was too good for entry level (their words, not mine) or because I wasn't a minority and they needed to hire one to appear like an equal opportunity employer. True story. Obviously I am glad that 20 years later I am back at it. That Yeah Write editor was vicious. Attacked everything from my story to the typeface on my blog (which is a design choice) and it stung...bad. There was nothing constructive or helpful about it. I like your love letter a lot better and it is greatly appreciated. You are a great talent at writing. I keep hoping you will rub off on me through association... LOL Thank you so much for stopping by and for your sweet and kind comments! ♥

  3. Always do it for yourself Kathy! If others like it, that's a bonus! I've always thought you were über talented, and hoped I could write as well...
But when it becomes a chore, it's ok to lay it down for a while...
    Just make yourself happy!!!
P.S. that guy was a douche!!!

    1. Sheethal, I am so pleased you enjoy my art. I love it too. It is the one thing in life I do that I don't have to second guess whether it is good before I put it out there. I know it is. I can see. LOL And I love doing it. Thank you so much for stopping by, your kind comments, and for your friendship. I value it very much! ♥

  5. You know there are all kinds of different books. You could do one of your haikus with your art as illustrations. I love your short stories too.

Orange? Not a fan unless it's used with other colours, but not as a stand alone. My mom still has the melon coloured counters she and my dad put in the kitchen in the 60s. She's always been into citrus colours; the livingroom is yellow. No thanks. I like white/grey/lite blue walls b/c my art prints and posters are loud splashes of colour.

    1. JoJo, I guess you are right about that! HA HA. Never really thought about that before. Definitely an idea to ponder. I haven't really been a fan of bright colors until recently. I think it is a menopausal thing. LOL Thank you so much for always stopping by and always leaving such great comments. Love it! ♥

  7. Orange is my granddaughter's favorite color, too. I love its brightness and cheerfulness, but could never wear anything orange and look decent. Yes, Kathy, keep engaging in your art (you are so talented!) but don't dismiss the writing. As Tina advised, it will be fun again.
    Blessings!

  9. Sorry to hear you wanted to give up the writing, Kathy. I've felt that, too, and wonder why I bother when I feel like all that effort amounts to nothing or mean editors ripping stuff apart. The main thing is to write for yourself to nurture your soul and to have a good time being creative. That's what I do and since I had this revelation that being creative is part of who I am and needs expression whether anyone else gives a damn or not, I'm so much happier. As for orange, I love that colour. My hair has always been orange being a redhead. Orange is pumpkins and autumn leaves. What's not to like? Keep creating, Girl. There are those who appreciate your efforts like me and many others!

    1. Cathy, thank you so much for your kind encouragement. I will continue the best I can. I have lived and learned though, I will avoid sending anything through HER again. UGH!! Although, I am a little hit over the head and may get stupid and actually submit again. I am a glutton for punishment but not completely stupid so it won't be for a long time. May just write and share it here and to hell with linking up. That "love letter" stung and really made me second guess everything. Thank you so much for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  11. Oh my goodness!!! I had heard there were some changes over at Yeah Write. I only contributed BEFORE the high standards went into effect (obviously) ;) I am so sad that they made you feel badly about your writing! Let's move on....we LIVE in the home of the ORANGE!!!!!!! 1. Andrea, there have been changes. Don't get me wrong, there is are amazing stories to be found there BUT with that said, it seems that the change has narrowed the grid to only the same select few who continue there week after week. Occasionally those select few that write things I struggle to understand they are so obscure and abstract. They are very picky, and on some levels vicious. I have bounced back and moved on. This post was very healing and I felt loads better after writing and posting it. I appreciate your kind words and your visit. I love cheetos!!! ♥

  12. Ohh that must have hurt..It happens to me when I write something and some nonsensical bitchy person comes at me with nasty comments..Though it should not affect me but it does and so I understand how you must be feeling..But I'm also with you on the fact that this is your blog and you will write whatever you want to and however you want to..And I love your Orange Aura Kathy! Ignore any such 'love letters' , we don't need sermonizing do we? :)

    1. Nabanita, you are right...it shouldn't. But it does, because no matter how we try to separate ourselves from what we write or the art we create...it is personal. I thought if I quit writing personal stuff and wrote fiction I would be immune....NOT! On the most part I was. If I got a mean comment, I would delete it. Which I have to admit, I have always been lucky those have been few and far between. This came right into my email and kind of hit below the belt since I wasn't TRYING to publish a book. I was only trying to link up on their site to their writing prompt. What really got me was how this person tore my story apart, then bitched about the typeface I used on my site, and that perhaps it was a bit too happy??? As far as THAT letter goes, I have chose to keep it handy as a reminder when moments of future stupidity overtake me. Thank you so much for stopping by and for your sweet comments and advice. I really appreciate your friendship! ♥

  13. There are all kinds of writers in the world, and you Kathy surely are one of those who write as a personal means of expression. So why bother what others think of it :) I am happy you found your art and haiku and your personal approach to writing that helps you express what is important to you. That's the best thing to happen to anyone :) So keep smiling and keep creating! And as for the orange walls, I have yet to try any such bright colour on any wall of my home, have always preferred neutrals with bright accents in furnishings etc. But orange is a colour I do have in my wardrobe! It is a great colour.

  14. Doh! Publishers suck. You really have to listen to your readers, not some uppity-nosed editor who can only see success where success has already be had. Truthfully, your haikus are some of the best I've ever read, and your flash fiction? Woman, I adore it. Do what you love and write fiction when you feel the need, but I hope you won't give up on it. No matter what some stuck-up rejection says, your talent is obvious.

  18. First off, the problem with orange has nothing to do with size and everything to do with coloring. It tends to make people's skin tones look weird, unless you are black. Orange looks amazing on dark skinned people.

As for writing, everybody gets rejection letters, and that does not make you a bad writer. Caroline Cooney's first eight novels were never published; it took Jay Asher some twelve or sixteen years or so to get his best seller published; and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, another best seller was rejected 111 times -- although personally, I think it should have been rejected 112. Hang in there.
