The Last Request

Would his heart race, then jolt to a stop?

       Would death be excruciatingly painful?

Terrifying thoughts plagued him ever since the conviction.  It didn’t matter that he hadn’t killed her, couldn’t kill her.

No one believed him.

Failed appeals, endless testimonies, and the meager evidence: in the end, no one had been convinced.  As far as the world was concerned, he had brutally murdered her.  The mighty hand of justice had failed him.

Fast forward to his last request:

watching the sunset while sipping a final glass of wine, resigned, eager for the peace and freedom only death could provide.

Never Again

Tears fell as Kara packed her bag.  Another trip to the emergency room revealed her husband had broken her arm, split her lip, and given her another black eye this time.

“Damn woman, you are always sick.  You really are a worthless bitch.” He taunted before hurling a beer bottle at her.  She couldn’t help the allergies that had plagued her since childhood.  A quick apology only egged him on.

As she picked herself up, she spied her 5 year old cowering in the corner and vowed this would end for her son’s sake, and her own.

Never again.

Avenue of Imagination

Photo provided by Parul Kashyap Thakur

Sunlight dancing through the canopy of trees provided a kaleidoscope of flickering shadows on the forest floor.  It was one of the reasons Cassie sought sanctuary within its fragrant depths.  A safe haven, here she could escape, blend in, and find refuge.

Surrounded by towering oaks, she felt protected.  She sang, danced, and chased shadows.   Her imagination unleashed, she penned stories and created illustrations of the beings she imagined lived there: unicorns, dragons, and fairies.

Years later, the avenue of towering trees were woefully replaced by condos and street lamps.  Illusions gone, only memories remain of that distant enchanted place.

Dinner and a Show

Photo prompt courtesy of  BAR
Annaliese and Nick raced with their parents trailing behind to the monkey exhibit.  The animal encounter was scheduled to start in exactly 2 minutes.  A crowd had already gathered to watch and the young family jockeyed for the best position.

Meanwhile, two zoo keepers clothed in regulation khaki shorts and forest green polo shirts moved amongst the monkeys distributing corn cobs.

“Gus, mind your manners!  People are watching!”

“Aw, mom! People are always watching, and I am starving!” Gus scrambled to capture a few loose kernels that had fallen from his mother’s cob.

“Gus, don’t you DARE eat off the ground in front of company.  Wait for another cob.  The people will give you one.  Be patient!”

“5 second rule. No time for patience!  Every monkey for himself!” Gus squealed as he lunged.

His mother chose to ignore his antics, preferring to enjoy her dinner instead.    After all, she knew you only fought the battles you could actually win.   Gus licked the ground, enjoying every last kernel oblivious.

The crowd watched transfixed.  The monkeys ate, then raced to their perches, swinging on the ropes, scaling the tree, and providing the entertainment the crowds had ultimately come to see.  Cameras snapped, cell phones raised in salute, to capture the moment for later, to share in Snap Chat, Face Book, or Twitter to the less fortunate souls who couldn’t be at the zoo today.

Annaliese and Nick clapped delighted, while their parents encouraged them to move on to the next exhibit with the rest of the crowd.  More animals to see, more ground to cover, and only the beginning of their day at the zoo.

What to Say??

I will be on an enforced vacation from the internet for a while, not because I want to be but because priority dictates.  I have bills to pay and unfortunately having a place to live, something to drive, and food to eat trumps having cable television and the internet for the moment.  So I am cleaning up loose ends, answering comments, reading blogs, and writing this.  I might have been able to come up with something truly inspired and creative today for this prompt at the BAR like some magnificent story that would you begging for more.  Unfortunately, I got nothing!  Instead, I choose to tell it like it is.

What will I be doing instead you wonder?  I have several plans to keep myself busy.  I plan to play my keyboard, bake bread and goodies, and continue to knit the blanket I have been working on forever.  Someday I might just get it done too! Watch me!  I have several books I would like to read that I have been putting off for a while…and well rest assured I can always find something to keep myself occupied with from running my kids here to there and everywhere to organizing and compiling my never ending pile of recipes!   So I bid you adieu, au revoir, until we meet again.  I will be back before you even begin to miss me!
