To Cry or Not to Cry?

Are you okay with people seeing you cry?

I know that there are a lot of people out there that think it is a sign of weakness to have others see them cry.  By the time that I am on the verge of tears and been driven to the emotional state of crying, I really don’t give a rat’s ass who sees me.  I am going to cry whether anyone likes it or sees me or not.  That is just the way I am.  There may be no crying in baseball, and maybe big girls don’t cry, but why not?  Why hold it in?  What is the crime in letting those tears flow and getting them off your chest?  Why care what others think?  It is an emotional release a lot of people need.  It is a lot more acceptable than letting out your feelings with violence.

I guess that is why if I am to the point of crying, I really don’t care.  I am going to cry.  I wouldn’t be able to hold those tears in if I tried.  There are times when I am mad as hell that I have been forced to tears of frustration.  At times like that, it is best to let me vent that way.  Better to cry than to beat the snot out of someone.  There are other times when tears have flowed freely at a joyous occasion like when I was married and when my precious babies were born.  Maybe a bowling ball fell on your toe.  After the string of cussing subsides, why not cry?  It hurt like a bitch didn’t it? Crying is perfectly acceptable on occasions like that.  If something hurts that bad, crying is a given.    Sure sad songs make me cry.  You can also bet your last dollar that tears will be rolling down my face during emotionally charged movies.  As my Grandpa always used to say, “Better out than in!”  It makes little difference that he was referring to farts or burps at the time.  The saying works equally well for vomit, diarrhea, and yes, even tears.

Sometimes you just have to cry.  Have a good old fashioned crying jag.  Streak that mascara, turn that face red, and choke on those sobs.  Who cares what others think?  Screw them!!  It is good for what ails you!  They can deal with their own emotional issues.    You will feel better getting it out of your system until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. Personally, I always fight against crying (especially in public). Of course, that just may be part of my personality (and reacting to people around me who are the opposite). I care too much about what people think. But it's great to remember that it's okay to cry - and I do agree that it's something the American culture in particular needs to get used to and see as normal. It's not healthy not to cry.

    2. Heh, well, the admiration goes both ways. I think it's amazing you can let go. Seems like we all probably need to share some abilities all 'round. :) And thanks for your comment on my blog. :)

  3. Thank God I'm not crying but geez you had me laughing over the everything has to come out bit--not just tears but vomit and diarrhea!!! I do hate it when I feel a crying jag coming on--I prefer to do it in private because I sound like a hysterical loon when I cry...no one needs to see that!

  4. Was at a wedding yesterday and the groom was crying through his vows. It of course led to all of us crying (some more than others) which was a nice release. I think that sometimes we need to cry when we're happy in order to balance the times we cry when we're sad. Maybe that's the meaning of the phrase "a good cry."

  5. I cry aaaalllllll the time. I'm always on the verge of tears it seems. lol happy stuff, heartwarming stuff, sad stuff.... When I was waiting at SeaTac Airport for my redeye flight back east when my dad died, I burst into tears in the crowded gate area. I didn't care at all. I was sobbing and everyone was staring. One person next to me asked if I was ok and offered me a kleenex and was very sweet when I told them why I was weeping. Oh bother, my eyes are all teared up now... :*(

  6. I've always seen crying as a great release, both for happy and sad times. I am prone to cry more often than not and honestly I find it it often coincides with how I am feelign about myself emotionally often more than others.

  7. I am most definitely a crier. I cry when I'm happy, cry when I'm sad, cry when I'm lonely, cry when I watch TV or sometimes out of nowhere, just cry because.

Never gave it a thought that I shouldn't cry in front of anyone, never tried not to...though I would love to NOT cry when I'm mad. That is the only time I think it's irritates me.

    1. Jo, crying when you are madder than a hornet is a tad bit annoying but it just goes to show just how upset you are! Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  8. I try not to cry in public because I think I look ugly when I really let go. But, I do think crying is very necessary to release the tension and clear the air. I feel so fortunate that my husband understands that sometimes you just have to let it go, as you said, and have a good old fashioned crying jag. Both of us feel that it's not good to refrain from crying. And, it touches me to see someone tearing up and appreciating a tender moment.

  9. When i was younger i was much stronger at holding back the tears. As i've gotten older i realized i'm a crybaby through and through! I try to hold back the full-on ugly cry but even that busts out a few times. I hate to say it but i still get very weepy during "that time of the month". My boyfriend will even ask if that's why i'm being over emotional at times. Oh well! Good to see i'm not the only crier coming out. :)
