7 Things I Can't Live Without

I am taking part in “The Write Tribe Festival of Words 1st to 7th September 2013"

1.      I would be lost in this life without my husband and children.  They are the reason I get up in the morning and persevere.   I love them with every fiber of my being.

2.      When my husband is on the road I count on my four dogs for warmth and companionship, and they don’t disappoint.  I always sleep on my side.  My rat terrier, Puppy Love, always snuggles up against my back.  My Boston terrier, Jolly, is my teddy bear and the two small dogs (the Chihuahua Zoe, and the Min Pin Tia) snuggle around my feet.  We all dive deep under the covers and stay warm.  I would miss my dogs.  They are a part of my family with their unique personalities.  There isn’t a one of them I could live without.

3.      I don’t think I would be me if I didn’t have a book nearby to read.  I have loved books since I was very small.

4.     My computer is my link to the outside world and I would be a fish out of water without it for long.  With it I explore my creativity with my writing, photography, and the bit of web design I have dabbled in.  I play computer games and listen to music.  Last but not least I connect with friends from all over the world, some which have become a very important, vital part of my existence.

5.     A very important link to my husband is my cell phone.  I am not sure how I ever lived without a cell phone in the past.  These days my cell phone is my primary phone.  Why pay for a house phone and a cell phone?  So I don’t.  My cell phone goes everywhere I go.  I love my stopwatch/timer app that keeps track of how many minutes I am pedaling on my exercise bike and when to turn the meat on the grill.  I check the weather, my bank account, and who died from my phone.  It is another link to the outside world that I use constantly.

6.     I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have my tunes.  They are safely stored on my cell phone and whenever I hear a song I instantly love I download it to my phone.  I write better to music.  I work better when listening to music.  Music is the heartbeat of my existence and an integral part of my soul.  It makes me happy when I am sad and makes life one big party.

7.     I can’t live without food.  I admit it, I love to cook and I absolutely suck at dieting.   I love to create in the kitchen and I am good at it.  I love to try new recipes and tackle new culinary challenges.  We all have to eat right?  While I hate the drudgery of the cleanup, I love the creation of great food, the satisfied expressions on my family’s faces, and the accomplishment I feel when my French baguettes come out of the oven perfect.  I love trying new things and the thrill when I get it right.

Don’t Judge Me

Welcome to the 4th week of BlogFest 2012.  Today’s writing prompt is brought to us from Paula at Paula Martin-Romance Writer.  Thank you Paula for the great prompt!!

I don’t think I have ever judged a book by its cover.   I have always read the brief summery inside the book jacket or on the back cover to decide if I would find the book worth reading.  If the book happens to have the added bonus of being penned by an already favorite author, I don’t care what the cover looks like.  I am going to read that book.  Even when selecting books for my kids I delve a little deeper into the story book than the cover.  I flip through the pages and look at the illustrations to see if they are engaging.

Ever since an encounter in my early twenties I treat people the same way.  I never judge them by their outward appearances anymore.  I wait to see what kind of person they are first.  When I was 24 my mother went three times a week to dialysis.  She would spend 4 hours on the machine at a time surrounded by the same group of people.  After a while, it was hard not to get to know people after seeing them so much.  I remember this one man who was brought in from a nursing home.  He was half blind and both his legs had been amputated.  To look at him, you would have thought he had always been that way and never had much of a life.  You couldn’t help but feel sorry for him; he was such a sad lonely figure.

I made a habit of saying hello to all the patients and decided one day to go over and say hello to him and see how he was doing.  He told me that because he failed to keep his diabetes under control he had to have his legs amputated and had all but lost his sight.  His kidneys were shot which is what brought him to dialysis.  Before he got sick he led a very interesting life.  He drew maps for a living and had the pleasure of drawing the official maps for the Calgary Olympic Winter games of 1988.  He had went to the games and been an integral part of them at the time.  Who would have thought the man who looked half dead most of the time could turn into such a fascinating person?  From that day on, he came to life when I walked into the dialysis center and I always made a point to visit with him when I made my rounds.  We became fast friends.  He went from sleeping most of the time he was there looking lost and alone to talking animatedly about his past adventures and laughing right out loud.

The best things in life aren’t always in plain view.   It really doesn’t matter what people or books look like.  You must approach every one and thing with an open mind and explore the possibilities within before you can have any hope of making a fair judgment.  What matters is what lies hidden within until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

What I Love Best!- BFF 126

The girls over at Blogging for Fun have challenged me to write about what I love.  Since I make a pretty constant practice of proclaiming my undying love for my husband and kids, I thought I would focus on some other stuff I love instead.

I love music!  I love anything with a beat, and anything with a message that stirs my heart.  When I was growing up I got into my head that I wanted to learn to play the piano, so I taught myself how to read music to play…well.  I used to love and sit and play every single song in a songbook. The harder the piece the better.   I also love anything with a beat that rocks or has a message that rocks my soul.  I love to sing along at the top of my lungs while bopping to the beat.  I also discovered a new passion playing the drums on the game Rock Band for Wii.

I love to crochet!!  The harder the stitches, the more challenge, the more fun it is! That was something else I made up my mind I wanted to learn how to do. My mom bought me a book when I was young and I sat down and taught myself.  There is nothing better than working on a project while watching a movie on a cold winter evening.

I love movies!!! I love to laugh, so I love comedies.  The funnier, the better!! I have a vast collection of movies that continue to grow.  If I love it, or it touches me, I have got to have it!!!

I love to read.  My favorite series by far is the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling.
I love the whole magical world of Hogwarts.  I love the movies!  I love the movie “Gone With the Wind”, the book of the same title, and the sequel.  I love anything written by Danielle Steel, Debbie Macomber, and Nora Roberts.  I have a whole slew of favorite authors, but those are the top ones that come to mind.

I am a big kid, and I love games.  What began as a favorite past time with my mom and dad continues to this day with my own kids.  I love to play cards, Lego games, and board games.

I love to cook!  I love to make a recipe my own!!  I have a collection of favorite recipes that I have perfected .  The only downside of this love, is that I hate doing dishes.  Got to take the good with the bad with that one.

I love to write.  I love to work on my website from the posts to the design to the music that brings it to life.   I love the whole creative process.

Although I love my dogs,  I have loved cats since birth.  I am fascinated with their big long bushy tails and love to entice them into singing a few bars for me.   I love their “make me like you!” attitude which is so much like my own.

I am one of those nut jobs that love winter and the beauty of snow.  I would rather freeze my a$$ off than roast to death.  I love Christmas and the magic of a Christmas snow.

Last but certainly not least, I love to laugh!  Just like the old dude in Mary Poppins, I would be dancing on the ceiling if it were possible literally laughing my a$$ off at the tiniest things until tears are streaming down my face and I am literally choking on myself.  I love being silly, and it seems I get sillier with age.  Mooning is definitely not out of the question.  I love to proclaim that I am a few sandwiches short of a picnic or loony as a tune, because that is exactly what I am and proud of it.  I tend to live life having more fun than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest just because life is to short not to.  Until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a truckers wife.
