Beautiful or Not?

NaBloPoMo asks:
Do you think there is a collective definition of beauty or is it always in the eye of the beholder?

I firmly believe that there is no collective definition of beauty.  Beauty is subjective to each person’s personal opinion and is always in the eye of the beholder.  That is one of the things that bothered me most when I spent the better share of my time devoted to my art.  Just because I thought my work was good didn’t mean anyone else would think so.  Just like beauty, its worth or the question of whether it was good or not was up to whoever was looking at it.

It amazes me how superficial beauty is and how people can judge others first by their appearance.  Sure someone may be beautiful outside but be a complete conceited a$$hole inside.  On the other hand, a person might be physically plain but once a person gets to know them their true beauty is revealed by their personalities and their goodness.   I believe that is why there is someone for everyone.

While some things on the earth could fall into a collective definition of beauty such as landscapes, beaches, sunsets, and flowers, most other things are strictly beautiful in the eyes of the beholder until next time when I give you another glimpse into another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. I would definitely agree that Nature is the one exception to the universal definition of beauty. There are some physical traits I believe we would all agree are beautiful. But the overall "look" of a person can change depending on the eyes doing the seeing. I might find one man indescribably handsome and you might see him as plain or even homely.
Beauty is a personal and totally individual thing, if you're talking the whole person.

Good job! ♥ Your impulse was correct!

    1. Jo, exactly. If only people would allow themselves to get to know a person before they judged them. People that are beautiful on the outside tend to be really hateful people. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  2. I agree, things in nature are just beautiful and most often can be agreed that they are "beautiful". I do believe other things are beautiful in the eye of the beholder. For me , it is the "complete" package of a person that makes them beautiful. We have an atty in my office who is stunning in appearance, but really not pleasant and speaks down to people. To me she is NOT beautiful. NIce looking, but not the whole package. Sad really.

    1. Winnie, I am all for the complete package too. That was not always the case. I have had my eye turned by many a good looking man only to discover he was a complete a$$ as a person and not worth my time. That lady in your office doesn't sound beautiful to me either. Thank you for dropping by to read and for your comments! :D ♥

  3. Yes, I agree Kathy.... Beauty is different for everyone. Which is a great thing, really. Otherwise, we'd all strive to be the same. And how boring would that be?.....

    1. Danneromero, it would be very boring!! The fact people are different is what makes them so fascinating and so special!! Thank you for stopping by to read and for your insightful comments! ♥

  4. I agree with ya on the 'beautiful people' thing. I have met some drop dead gorgeous people who open their mouths and become very ugly. I have always been extremely insecure about my looks, wanting to be taller and thinner and have better skin and hair. And now I have a man who truly thinks I'm beautiful and hot and that's helped me feel better about myself.

    1. JoJo, what a pity they had to ruin a good thing by opening their mouths!! I have always been insecure in my looks too, but you are absolutely right. Once you find one person that thinks you are the light of their life and beautiful that is all that really matters! Thank you for stopping by to read and for your comments! ♥
