Vacation

My husband and I haven’t went on a vacation since our honeymoon.  Once we got married and had kids there just never seems to be money for a real vacation.   Bills and other wants and needs always seem to come up and take precedence.

We were married at a candlelight service on a Friday night and left immediately following the reception.  We didn’t travel far, but we did choose a location that seemed like it was a world away from where we were from.  We drove to Sandusky, OH and boarded a ferry nearby to Put-In-Bay, Ohio, a small island off the coast.
While there we spent the day and night sight seeing, tasting wine at the winery on the island, and cruising about in a golf cart we rented.  Unknown to us, the island was celebrating their own “New Year’s Eve” celebration and everyone except us was three sheets to the moon drunk as skunks.  That was a big surprise considering we got married in September!  We witnessed people passed out spread eagle in open clearings suffering from a little to much fun, and others singing drunkenly and laughing at nothing in particular.  It was a festive atmosphere to say the least, and we thoroughly enjoyed the sights and sounds of the island.  People are so funny when they are pie eyed!!

Late that night we caught the ferry back to the mainland and headed for the hotel we had checked into that morning.  We had gotten our key, left our luggage, and headed for the island.  By the time we returned we were both extremely tired…so tired in fact that we marched into the wrong hotel.  Same hotel chain…wrong hotel.  It didn’t even register until we reached our room and instead of a keyhole we were greeted with one of those fancy dancy locks that require a special card to unlock.

Needless to say, that was an “Oh $hit” moment of gargantuan proportions!   We panicked and then hauled a$$ and got the hell out of there before we were caught trying to break into someone’s room…giggling all the way.   It sure was a big relief when we located the correct hotel complete with a room door lock that magically opened with the key we had.

Day 2 of our honeymoon was spent cruising about the more sedate Kelley’s island in a golf cart.  We had a wonderful time!!  It was the perfect get away. Unfortunately, it was over to soon and we headed home so we could both be at work Monday morning.

Someday if the fates are kind, we will plan and have the money to take the kids to Disney World.  Until then weekend getaways at local campgrounds will be cherished.  All we need is the almighty hitch for our truck and we will be in the business to be the happiest campers this side of the Great Lakes.  One of these days it will be our turn to go on vacation. One of these times we will have extra money to sock away for that special get away.  I guarantee you, whether it be near or far…it will be enjoyed, treasured, and savored by each and everyone of us!!   Until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. We took two vacations while the kids were young. One to the Smokie Mountains for 5 days and once to Cedar Point for 3 days. That's it. It's very hard to take time and have $ while raising a family and building a home. Now is our time and it's still hard some years. But I love to plan our next trip whenever it happens!
Hang in there...nice memories of the honeymoon.

  2. Jo, you are so lucky!! I hope we will be able to get some vacations in someday. If nothing else once we get a hitch put on our truck it would be fun to go camping at the campground. We usually go close to where we live. It is a lovely campground with a huge pool with water slides. We had a blast the last time we went. My husband and I went to Cedar Point several times before we got married. Kind of waiting to take the kids until they are a little older and taller so they won't be so limited on what they can ride. :D Thank you so much for stopping by to read and comments. I enjoyed hearing about your vacation memories!!

  3. My husband is a home body, so we never go anywhere together. But, I get around...LOL. If I want to go somewhere...well...I go! But, it is always to visit family. I don't care anything about any vacation spot destinations. Probably because I actually live in a vacation spot...LOL...lots to do here.

It looks like you had a nice honeymoon. Day trips are good when you have children. I don't remember ever going an a vacation until I was 12-13, but I had a great childhood with the day trips!

  4. Great story! That's so funny that you ended up at the wrong hotel. I can see my husband and me doing that ourselves :-) We had been married for 14 years before we took our first family vacation. I think there's something to be said for teaching your children to enjoy the day trips and simpler outings. I would much rather have several one or two day trips out each year than one week all at once. That one week is wonderful, until it's over. Then it's another year or longer before you get another break.

  5. Sounds like the two of you had fun!! The last time I went to Put-In-Bay with a bunch of friends one of them was arrested for drunk driving. what a fiasco that was!! The cops pulled him over on his bicycle (no I did not say moped or motor bike--I did say BICYCLE) and made him take a Breathalyzer! Imagine having to go in front of the judge for that one!! Word to the wise--DO NOT RIDE A BICYCLE IN PUBLIC IF YOU HAVE BEEN DRINKING.

We still laugh about that one.

  6. Darlene, I would even welcome some day trips!! We went on some of those when my daughter was smaller, before my son was born. We just haven't had the time or money since to go. My husband spends his life on the road, so he isn't real big on going anywhere once he finally gets a chance to come home. I am hoping we will get the chance this coming year to make some more day trips. Thanks for stopping in to read and comment!!

  7. Theresa, yes...us at the wrong hotel in the middle of the night was pretty funny. Sure was a funny feeling at the time. I am hoping that this summer we can get away for some day trips while my husband is home. The problem with him is that he is on a constant trip, so when he comes home he never wants to leave. There is always certain manly things he needs to attend to once he arrives...like upkeep of the vehicles and mowing the yard. That is his department. Although I know how to do basic stuff on the vehicles, he mows the yard. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your comments!

  8. Jenn, we had a blast!! After being to Put in Bay it doesn't surprise me one bit that someone would get a DUI on a bike. That is funny. I can still see this guy passed out spread eagle in this field with birds perched on top of him. LOLOLOLOLOL Too funny!! I loved hearing about your story. Thanks for stopping in to read and comment!!

  9. I understand the "no money for vacations" phrase. I turn 50 in early December and keep asking my husband where we're going? :p

As for Disney, it's a giant vacuum cleaner. You open your wallet and it sucks out all the money. Does your husband ever drive anywhere fun? You could all hop in his truck and off you go!

  10. Joyce, sometimes he does go to interesting places. Unfortunately, he is not able to take passengers at the company he works for. When my oldest was little we rode along to Florida once which was fun, but not like a vacation because we didn't really get to sight see or spend any time. Even though Disney is a giant vacuum cleaner, I have been there 3 times in my life, at 4,5, and 18 and it was the best, most magical time I ever have had. I would love to experience again with my husband and kids. For me that would be the ultimate! Thanks for stopping in to read and for your kind comments!

  11. I also enjoyed reading about your honeymoon, Kathy! We never did have a real honeymoon. After we were married, we drove from south of Chicago to Orlando where he was stationed with the Air Force. We went through West Virginia to visit with my family a few days. Then we leisurely drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway through SW Virginia into Asheville, NC. It was very nice in June!!!

Took a few side trips with my husband while he was driving the big truck. Rented a car and went to such places like Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Salt Lake City, etc. Those were nice day trips.

Only took a couple of real vacation trips with our children. Most of the vacations were spent traveling to visit with family. But, we did go to the Black Hills one year. Also made a camping trip visiting Lexington, KY, Washington, DC and Williamsburg, VA for our last trip together before the girls went to college. Otherwise, we've had lots of short camping trips. Thanks for the post and I've also enjoyed reading all the comments.

  13. Your pics are so cute!! We used to go to Florida twice a year when the kids were growing up because my hubby's boss needed their boat trekked down to their winter house and then brought back in the spring. We were happy to take care of it, especially since otherwise, vacations wouldn't have been in the budget. They paid all of our expenses and let us stay at their Florida house when we went. It was terrific, but I have to say that my favorite vacation ever was the first one my hubby and I took once the kids were grown. Just us! :O)

  16. Laura, we were so tired we just saw the sign for the hotel chain we knew we were staying at and headed for it. We stumbled up to our room, I dug out the key, and realized in short order we were in the wrong place. We freaked out and woke up in a big hurry! LMAO Thank you for stopping by to read and comment!! I hope we will get to go somewhere someday! :D

  17. Let me tell a funny story on my husband when he was trying to check into a motel. It was a hot summer day and he was driving an old truck down to North Carolina to trade for a little foreign car that our youngest daughter could use in college. It was a stick shift with no AC and it felt like he was sitting just two inches from the roadway.

They were hot, sweatty and tired. He knew I'd made reservations at a Red Roof Inn in Charlotte and would meet them there. So, he stopped at the first one he saw and went in to wait in line. When he finally got up to the desk, he says "My wife made weservations at a Wed Woof Inn. Are we in the wight place?" Many standing around the lobby heard him and just giggled. (He giggled too after hearing himself talk in that silly way.) Of course, he was not in the "wight place". You certainly do a lot of silly things when you're tired and worn out.

But, it's good to have things to laugh about in this crazy world. Guess that's why I enjoy your blogs so very much. Have a great week!!

  19. I totally know about not getting a honeymoon! Mine was spent in a U-haul moving my stuff from Wisconsin to Arizona. It sounds like you made the most of your time though! Great story about going back to the wrong hotel (sounds like something I would do!). I hope that you get to take that vacation you've always dreamed of...in the meantime, camping is great! My husband and I are big into camping!

  20. Susan, you and me both. It certainly made for great memories and quite a few giggles after the fact. We were effectively freaked out when we went to the wrong hotel. Awful stomach sinking feeling that was!! LOL My husband introduced me to RV camping and I have been hooked since. There is nothing quite like sitting out by the fire! Thanks for stopping in to read and comment!!
