Black Cats and Superstitions

Today kicks off week 2 of Blogfest and today's host is Kelly over at Monkey Heart Discourses.  Today's writing prompt asks how I feel about black cats and superstitions.  Ever since I was a little girl there has always been at least one black cat in the house.  I personally love cats.  I love the way they sashay about and purr when they are happy to see me.  Many black cats have come and gone in my life for one reason or another.  About a year ago we took in yet another black kitten.  After much deliberation, we named her Rosie.

Rosie is full of personality and rules over my daughter’s room.  When she is lonesome for attention and feeling daring she will venture out into the rest of the house and eyeball my three dogs before making a mad dash back to her sanctuary.  If the dogs get a good look see in her direction, they will give chase and try to claim her as their latest chew toy.  At the very least they make a racket to prove they are dogs and that they in all essence rule the roost.  She snuggles up against my daughter and keeps her warm at night and is without a doubt her cat.  She only likes me because I feed her and change her litter box.  She is the only cat I have ever had who hates having her tail messed with.  For those that dare, she will hiss and the claws will come out.  I haven’t figured out what is up with that yet, but since I have no desire to get the $hit scratched out of me I follow her rules.

I don’t really believe in superstitions although I know several by heart.  If all that baloney about black cats crossing my path were true I would have been in trouble a long time ago.  I have heard it said that if a bird flies into a plate glass window that someone you know has just died and have had that superstition ring true and verified on more than one occasion.  While I hate spiders as a general rule, I do count it as good luck if one flies down in front of my face.  Good luck for me, but bad for the spider because once I have seen it I make short work of ending its life.  Yes I kill bugs.  I am a bug murderer.  I admit it.  But hey, why be petrified of a bug?  Who’s bigger?  I am, so the spider is going down!  Providence knows at 5’0 tall, I can’t say that I am bigger than much.

I am more suspicious of people than I will ever be of cats, but that is just me.  I am weird that way.  Getting hurt and screwed over too many times will do that to a person.  No matter how many dogs invade my heart, I will always have a special place for cats until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker’s wife.

  1. Cool Song!!

I'm with you on the spider thing...if one happens to drop down on a web in front of me--bye bye spider!!

I have always loved cats and dogs equally, but not until my mid 30's I realized I was allergic to them!!

    Yikes!!

    1. Jenn, I have been allergic to both my whole life. Because of that I have been helping to keep the makers of Benedryl in business for a long time. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your comments! ♥

  2. Black cats are awesome! I've never understood the reasoning behind most of the superstitions out there. I think whoever made-up the black cats are bad luck, just hated cats.

  3. Spiders must go. Crickets too. I'm not a cat person (think they are cute though) and am horribly allergic to them but I never had the black cat superstition.

    1. JoJo, amen on the spiders. They just freak me out. One time the kids and I came out for the bus in the morning to discover this huge spider had spun a web between our two vehicles in the night. We discovered it feasting on some other bug and just about lost it. I did a little karate kick action on it and the spider and his web was no more. Of course I ran away shaking my foot out yelling Ewwww! but I took care of business. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  4. I always love your song choices, Kathy. I'm not a cat person, but I can see how our pets can mean so much to us. ♥

    1. Corinne, I am so pleased you enjoy the music I choose! It is very much apart of the whole package for me. You can't have a blog without music and graphics, at least I can't. A lot of people are able to carry it off with just their writing, but I like the whole multi-media package. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  5. Me too. I am not intimidated by bugs ... For some reasons in my mind, you are definitely a cat person. Why? Not sure. Just fit perfectly for you :-)

    1. Journey of Life, you know...you are probably right. I have been a cat person all my life. My husband is the one that insisted we have dogs. They grow on a person and I can not imagine life without my doggies now. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your comments! ♥
