H is for Hello

Remember those long ago teenage days when you called that guy or girl you were crushing on just to say “Hello”?  For me, once I got past hello I didn’t have much more to say.  Sure I giggled a lot, but beyond saying hello I had no earthly reason to call.  The guy probably thought I was a bloody idiot and looking back it is no wonder he never looked at me as anything more than a friend or worse a nuisance.

With my husband on the road more than he is not, I am constantly calling him to just say hello, to hear his voice, and to tell him I love him.  Occasionally I will have something else of importance to say but invariably it is a same shit, different day conversation.  Even though our conversations may be a lot of nothing started with a happy hello, they mean the world to me.  It brings that old slogan of the phone company’s “reach out and touch someone” to life.

I guess I am of a dying breed.  While I can appreciate an “I love you and miss you” text, it will never be quite as good as hearing my husband’s voice, hearing his laugh, and for just a little while having the illusion that he is here with me.  So I will call to say “hello” and probably will never jump on the band wagon with all the others who live to text instead of live.

  1. No text/ email can compare to hearing someone's voice, Kathy. I completely understand.

  2. Love this. There are times when I need to hear a voice, but I admit talking on the phone is not my favorite thing. I am a tester.

I wonder if your hubs smiles when he sees its you calling? I always wonder that when I call mine. I know I smile when I see his number pop up on my screen.

    God job, Kathy

    1. Jo, I love to hear his voice. It makes me feel more connected. It would be nice if he smiled, but with my luck he rolls his eyes and wonders what the hell does she want now! LOL Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments! ♥

  3. "I just called to say I love you," sang Stevie Wonder. A song which resonates with a lot of people.

  5. Ever so true Kathy - txts and emails simply cannot replace hearing someone's voice. It kind of makes the connection real. Nice one - and I can relate to the schoolgirl days of hello followed by silence!

  6. I agree...although I love getting a quick text from my husband, knowing he was thinking about me (which rarely happens..) I do love hearing his voice at the end of the day!

    1. Shannon, I never really thought about that! Since my husband is driving a semi truck it is not really safe to text but with his blue tooth he can call me whenever and talk to me as long as his heart desires or vice versa. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  7. I think it's sweet that you call your husband to say hello.

I also think it's fine to giggle during your teenage "hello" calls to your crushes- it's much better than calling and then hanging up when your crush picks up.

  8. I actually prefer texting to talking on the phone, mostly b/c my arm goes dead from holding the phone to my ear and I keep having to switch sides, but the only person I love to talk to is my sweet Russell. Although when he actually calls me, it usually means that there's something wrong with the truck so my heart sinks a little when he does. lol

  10. I do that a lot with my husband. It was more so when he was in the military, and I don't much need to do it now that he's out. But, just hearing his voice was wonderful, especially in the day they didn't have cell phones or internet, and calling was a luxury while deployed. I still pick up the phone sometimes (as he does to) just to hear his voice on the other end of the phone making me feel better when things get tough!

  13. Hi! My name is Kayla. I really enjoy reading your posts. My husband is also a trucker and I completely agree with you, although it is easy to send a quick text, seeing him on my caller ID on my phone and hearing his voice is a much better feeling! I just started my own blog about being a trucker wife and running my household, raising my toddler, going through pregnancy, and working all while my husband is on the road. I'd love for you to check it out!I'm going to add you to my list of trucker-wife resources and blogs, is that okay? rollonmomma.blogspot.com
