T is for Tulips

My mom loved flowers.  When warm weather came around the yard bloomed with color.   I remember her buying bulbs and oodles of flats of flowers that yours truly was always elected to help plant.  Spring meant lots of hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips.  When it was time to plant flowers, not even a rainy day deterred her.

I remember one year before our annual "Chicken Day", when my Dad barbecued chicken and we would have a massive feast after the running of the Indianapolis 500, when she got a hair across her ass that we HAD to have all the flowers planted before the guests arrived.  It mattered little that it was raining.  She dragged me out in the pouring rain to plant flowers in the squishy mud.  When it was time to eat, the rain stopped, the sun came out and the yard looked spectacular.

Almost every year we would visit Holland, Michigan during the Tulip Time festival to see acres of colorful tulips in full bloom.  Since then I have always loved tulips and all flowers.   Mom would take her camera
and take lots of pictures.  These days I am the one with the camera fascinated and enthralled with the blooms.  You will catch me tiptoeing through the tulips and zooming in on their beauty.

  1. What a nice story and great memories. (sorry about the planting in the mud, but I'm sure that it built character!) I got a new camera and am looking forward to photographing flowers. Lots of pretty ones around here! Beautiful pictures by the way. What vibrant colors!

    1. Maggie, it is still kind of chilly here. I will be so happy when it finally warms up and stays that way. I love winter, but for some reason this year I long for spring. Thank you for stopping by to read and for your kind comments!

  7. What a funny expression "Hair across her ass". Hadn't heard that one. Sort of like a bug up your butt, eh? My mom used to get that way, too.

Tulips are so beautiful and so welcome after a long winter, aren't they? Something so cheerful and colourful about those hardy flowers that can't help but signify spring.

  10. Tulips are my favorite flowers! It was the first flower my then four-year-old son picked out for me, and that's why they'll always be special. :)

  12. Charming! I'm so glad you included Little Richard. So who giggles? The trucker or his wife? Either way I'm sitting here giggling. I haven't been to the Holland festival in years. Now that I'm back in Michigan I can do it but not this year. I'm already booked in Ann Arbor and Indianapolis May 4-11. Spring is such a "happening" time! Mary at Mary A to Z PS thanks for visiting me today.

  13. Tulips are my favorites...they are so colorful and lovely. A lot of flowers remind me of funerals. Tulips remind me of life and laughing. Tiny TIm video was fun. I met him the week before he passed away. He was a very nice man. Didnt take himself too seriously. Very kind and gentle.
