What's Cooking -BFF 235

When I was diagnosed recently with a heart condition and hypertension my doctor immediately prescribed medication to lower it and a strict diet to help me drop weight and get healthy.  The diet consists of lean meats, lots of vegetables and fruits, and skim milk.  This is what I had for supper Saturday night.  I made a simple meatloaf combining 95% lean ground sirloin, onions, and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.  I had a serving of Brussel Sprouts, and a serving of raw vegetables on the side.  I rounded it off with a serving of strawberries and kiwi washed down with a glass of skim milk and a cup of beef broth.  While my doctor said I would lose weight, it would be slow going.  I haven't been doing this very long but so far I have lost about 23 lbs according to my bathroom scale.  My husband was passing through on his way to Vermont and actually told me he can tell I am smaller.  Hooray!

While I still cook things my children love and will eat, I have followed my diet to the letter.    Today I went and bought groceries and realized how my groceries have transformed from a cart full of potatoes, burgers, pizza, and pop to a cart full of fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats.  It makes me feel good that I am doing everything I can to be as healthy as I can and prolong my life in the process until next time when I give you another glimpse into the life of a trucker's wife.

  1. First let me say that dinner sounds wonderful and very much like what we eat around here regularly. Second that's a lot of weight loss! Good for you!
Third I hope you're also trying to get the kids to eat like you're now eating because, it's not easy, but in the long run, they will be so much healthier, too! I know that's a big job...changing kids eating habits.

I am so very proud of you.

  4. I try to keep to the lean too, though it's tough with the kids. But I do only allow them lean turkey hotdogs etc. Brussel sprouts are awesome sauted with garlic!

  5. Congratulations! It's sounds similar to what I'm doing. Since April, I've been following a low carb diet and have lost 30 pounds. Hang in there, but also make it a life style change and not just a diet.

  6. Wonderful!!! I'm so happy to hear that you have lost so much weight already. Good job!!! I'm home now, so time to put away my excuses. I did lose 6 pounds on my trip, but I'm going to find those pounds if I don't knock off the candy!

    I'm proud of you!!!

  7. Good for you! I love veggies. About 6 or 8 months ago I lowered the carbs for the family. I quit eating wheat. The rest just cut down and it has helped a lot. We feel better. My husband is on BP meds too.

  9. Congrats on your weight loss! That's so great!!!! :D Sadly I have been unable to follow the diet sheet you sent me....it's just not realistic right now. lol Although I do eat a lot of veggies and whole grains as much as possible. And also, my sweetie associates weight loss with cheating, b/c his ex wife had gone on a weight loss kick right before she left him for someone else. So unless a doctor tells me to do it, I try to just maintain and neither gain or lose.
