Wrong Way! Go Back!

It is day 16 of the Ultimate Blogging Challenge and NaBloPoMo. This post is in response of the picture prompt hosted by the GBE2 blogging group and is a true story.

I have lived in Elkhart, Indiana all of my life.  I was born here and more than likely I will die here.  There are two main one way streets in downtown Elkhart.  I worked at the public library for 6 whole years which sat on one of those one way streets.

Several years back when my kids were still small I was downtown on my way to the local library.  The library has a microscopic size parking lot and if you aren’t fortunate enough to find a place there you are forced to either park on the street or plan to walk a few city blocks from a public free lot.  Since I am not the best at parallel parking, I usually do laps until a place opens up that I can pull into.

That particular day I had my head up my ass a little more than usual.  I had circled the library looking for a place to park several times.  Without thinking I turned toward the library’s lot in hopes that a place had opened up.  It didn’t take long for me to realize that a line of traffic was coming straight at me.  Holy shit and sunny Jesus!!!!    I was going the wrong way on a one way street in a place I should have known better.  I almost shit my pants, literally!!  Instead of going back there was nowhere to go but forward so I floored the accelerator and zoomed into the library’s parking lot like a bat out of hell jumping a curb and hyperventilating all the way.

My heart was in my throat and racing.  I simply could not get my breath.  Thank God and sunny Jesus there were no cops around to witness that little spectacle because I am sure I would have had some big time explaining to do.  The cops probably would have given me a breathalyzer, sure that I was three sheets to the moon drunk, and hauled my happy ass straight to jail for that little stunt.    Go straight to jail, do not pass go, and pass over $200.00 plus.  Fortunately the only repercussion from the whole event was the racing stripe in my underwear.  Until now, I have never told a living soul this little tidbit of my sordid past.  The truth is out and my conscious is clear.  You live and you learn and from that day on, I pay a bit more attention and keep my eyes, ears, and brain tuned into the road!

  2. Lol. Ironically, I still remember being on a date, just new with a license...before I lived here I came here to pick up my date - and went down a one-way the wrong way RIGHT BESIDE THE LIBRARY.
Glad you're safe and sound to tell a funny story.

    1. Holli, I don't know!! I think it is a conspiracy and a trap for the city to make money of those of us that traipse through life with our heads up our asses. LOL I am so pleased you enjoyed my story. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥ Looking forward to doing a Tunes Tuesday next week since I didn't get around to it today.

  14. Great story! I grew up in a small town - complete with a town square and one-way streets... strangely enough, the city CHANGED the traffic pattern! Still one-way streets, just configured differently. I'm always nervous when I visit my mom that I will "go on auto-pilot" and cause a serious mess!

    1. Sylvia, how can they do such a thing! Lord, I would be toast in such a place. When I can go the wrong way on a one way street in a place I have lived all my life that don't change things generally just imagine what a catastrophe it would be for me to live in the small town you grew up in. LOL Too funny. Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comments! ♥

  15. And once again I am laughing at your pain, sort of pain! You were so lucky and look! Now you have a great little tale to share.

One way streets should be illegal, I'm thinking.
